Google Business Profile for Doctors in India: The 2026 Setup and Ranking Guide

85% of patients search 'doctor near me' before booking. Your Google Business Profile — free to set up — controls whether they find you or your competitor. Here is the complete guide.

If you are a doctor or clinic in India and you have not set up and optimised your Google Business Profile, you are invisible to the majority of new patients in your area. This is not an exaggeration. Google's own data shows that 85% of patients search for healthcare providers online before booking, and the vast majority use 'near me' or location-qualified searches. Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free tool that determines whether your clinic appears in those results.

What Is Google Business Profile

GBP is the panel that appears on the right side of Google search results and in Google Maps when someone searches for your clinic name or your specialty in your area. It shows your clinic's name, address, phone number, hours, photos, services, and patient reviews. It is free. It is also the single highest-ROI digital asset a local clinic can have — and most Indian doctors have either not claimed theirs or have a badly incomplete profile.

Why GBP Matters More Than Paid Ads for Local Clinics

When a patient in your locality searches 'cardiologist near me' or 'best dentist in Indiranagar', Google shows a 'Map Pack' — three local businesses with their pins on a map. Getting into that Map Pack is not about paying Google. It is about having a complete, well-maintained, reviewed GBP that Google trusts. Clinics in the Map Pack receive dramatically more calls and direction requests than clinics that rank below it in regular search results.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your GBP Correctly

First, go to business.google.com and claim your listing. If your clinic is already there (Google auto-creates listings from Maps data), claim it — do not let it remain unverified and unmanaged.

Choose the right category. This is the most-skipped step. Select your primary category precisely: 'Obstetrician-Gynecologist', 'Pediatrician', 'Dentist', 'Dermatologist' — not just 'Doctor' or 'Medical Clinic'. Google uses the category to match you to relevant searches. Add secondary categories for additional specialties.

Fill in every field. Business name exactly as your signboard. Address exactly matching your website and JustDial/Practo listings (Google penalises mismatches). Phone number, website URL, hours for every day of the week including lunch breaks, a 750-character description that mentions your specialty and the specific areas you serve.

Add photos. Clinics with 10+ photos receive significantly more profile visits than those with one or two. Add: your clinic exterior (so patients can find it), the reception and waiting area, consultation room (without patients), doctor headshots, any equipment relevant to your specialty. Update photos at least quarterly.

The Role of Patient Reviews

GBP reviews are the strongest local ranking signal after physical proximity. A clinic with 80 genuine 4.5-star reviews outranks a competitor with 10 reviews from 2020 almost every time — even if the competitor's website is better built.

The way to get more reviews: ask. Every patient who leaves a positive consultation is a potential reviewer. After a satisfying visit, say: 'We are trying to help more patients find us online. Would you take 30 seconds to leave a review on Google? Here's the link.' Handing them the review link (shortened via a QR code or WhatsApp message) removes all friction. Do not incentivise reviews — that violates both NMC guidelines and Google's policies. Just ask.

How Your Website and GBP Work Together

GBP and your clinic website reinforce each other. Your website should link to your GBP. Your GBP should link to your website. The business name, address, and phone number must match exactly across both. When a patient finds you on Google Maps and clicks through to your website, they should land on a page that clearly describes the same services, the same doctor, the same hours they saw on GBP.

This is one of the reasons Aarogya builds per-area landing pages. A page specifically titled 'Gynaecologist in Paschim Vihar — Dr Sadhna's Clinic' reinforces GBP signals for that specific geographic query. Google reads the website as confirmation of what the GBP claims.

Aarogya by DocxCloud sets up and optimises Google Business Profile as part of every clinic website package. From ₹2,000 per month — doctor profile, appointment booking, local SEO, and GBP setup, all managed.
